Supramolecular nanotubes spontaneously undergo a series of chemical reactions in alkaline water, which can provide a simple and low-cost alternative to polymer production.

Professor Liu Minghua said that this kind of thread is different from ordinary clothing fabrics because it can be biosoluble and degradable. Therefore, the preliminary idea is to apply the results to the field of biomedicine, such as silk thread for sewing wounds, drug delivery, or to promote cell growth.

Professor Liu said: 'Generally speaking, high-molecular-weight polymers are more common, but the characteristic of our research is to link small molecules through covalent bonds to polymerize them into materials with good mechanical properties and degradable.'

He also said that the study may also serve as a nerve repair. In the axons of nerve cells in the human body, tiny tubes function by polymerizing long fibers, which have a similar structure to yarns formed by self-polymerization of small molecules. Once biological tissues begin to grow, this supramolecular network can be dismantled on its own.
