Uzbekistan's cotton production declines, Tajikistan's production recovers

In 2017, Uzbekistan exported 477,000 tons of cotton, a year-on-year decrease of 25.2%, and its share of global exports fell to 3.4%. Cotton output fell to 951,900 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 8%.   Uzbekistan used to produce 1.1-1.2 million tons of lint per year, accounting for 6% of global production, and about half of the cotton was exported. In recent years, the Uzbek government has actively promoted domestic cotton consumption. From 2010 to 2014, Uzbekistan's textile industry attracted US$785 million in foreign investment and built 147 textile factories. The export potential of these factories is expected to reach US$670 million.   Data from the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan shows that the area of u200bu200bcotton planted in Tajikistan this year is expected to be 187,500 hectares, an increase of 13,500 hectares year-on-year. As of early April, the cotton planting area in Tajikistan has reached 42,300 hectares, and the planting progress is 22.6%. Experts said that the government encourages the expansion of cotton planting area to meet increasing market demand, and some grain and fodder crop fields have been replaced with cotton. Prior to this, the country's cotton planting area and output have been declining. From 2012 to 2016, the cotton production in Tajikistan gradually decreased from 418,000 tons to 270,000 tons, and the cotton planting area decreased from 200,000 hectares to 160,000 hectares. In 2017, the cotton planting area in Tajikistan reached the goal set by the government for the first time, and the output returned to 380,000 tons, an increase of 5.2% year-on-year.
