U.S. cotton exports bloom everywhere in 2016/17

In the first 11 months of 2016/17, U.S. cotton export shipments increased by more than 70% year-on-year. According to the current progress, U.S. cotton shipments will reach the USDA forecast of 3.157 million tons, the second highest in history.   This year, the US cotton export destinations are very wide, and 20 of the 25 export regions have seen growth. Among the top ten export markets, only Mexico and Turkey did not experience strong growth. Mexico’s cotton consumption continues to decrease, while U.S. cotton accounts for almost 100% of its cotton imports, so the growth of U.S. cotton exports to Mexico is limited. The growth of U.S. cotton exports to Turkey was limited by the increase in Turkish cotton production, and the country's import demand fell by more than 25%.   From a global perspective, after the recovery of global cotton consumption, cotton import demand only increased slightly, and strong US cotton exports have expanded the share of US cotton in many markets. Vietnam is expected to continue to be the largest export market for U.S. cotton. U.S. cotton exports to Vietnam have increased by 70% year-on-year. The country’s import demand continues to increase, and U.S. cotton's share of its import market continues to expand, which is expected to reach 60% this year. The continuous increase in textile cotton used in Vietnam has supported the strong export of U.S. cotton to Vietnam. In addition, the shipment volume of U.S. cotton to China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan is almost three times that of the same period last year. The cotton import market share of the above-mentioned countries has increased significantly, of which exports to China have increased by 200%.
